Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. SATURDAY, JANUARY 9, 1886. GOVERNMENT BONUSES FOR LOCAL INDUSTRIES.

In an interview with a reporter of the Dunedin, Herald—Mr Thomas Culling, one of the proprietors of ' the Mataura paper mill, said: — "My opinion is that bonuses are a delusion and a snare. Peo- , pie ' go ' for the bonus never thinking, of I the after consequences; That .same thing has been the , ruin of the, P P a P r -^ making industry in-^His Cpjoriy. Future requirements are not considered, but how, where, and when can the cheapest machinery necessary for the production of the stipulated quantity be obtained is the question. Any old thrown-out machinery that can be got is 'arranged for .in. order to get the subsidy— possiblyyby; someone (or a company), whose know-? ledgeof machinery^ is 'very limited? The* consequences are " inevitable. The subsidy is obtained, and the promoters continue the industry till it is all spent, with perhaps more beside, and they tind them selves possessed of, what?— -a, white phant. That was the case with the Mataura Mill, and the one at Woodhaugh too. They both achieved a success by arrangement — one got the bonus for brown and the other ; for grey paper. The offer of a bonus for the ; first 50 .tons of paper produced, m New " Zealand "has proved a calamity. It has been' the cause of great loss, not only to those who got the subsidy, but to those who carried on the industry afterward ."
