Fire Prevention.
The meeting convened by tL« Mayor to consider the best means to be a I opted for the prevention of fires within the Borough was held last evening m Mr Lmton's rooms. Abrahams, Hosking, Keys, Sinclair, and Arm strong. . ./-...; .. ■•■■ ;. i-;,,:\,,,; ; j The Mayor opened the meeting by j reading the advertisement inserted m the 'Standard re same, and hoped that those .present would intere ;t themselves practically m forming a asefulf Fire Brigade m the place of the late Brigade, which was, he believed, virtually \ defunct. The Council had appointed a committee to consider the question,: and lie : would call on Mr Wess to submit to them 4hefposition «^the la c brigade./.: ' jjr hiving expl lined to the meeting the cause of the old Fire Bri gade "brem^pg-up* sated tha- the position* at present was as follow? :— The property held by him on behalf, of the, brigade was valued at ijiXi, and they were' m .debt to the »xtent of £37. He would be glad to" assist id any way m his power to form the new brigade. The Mayor stated the following as, the proposals suggested by the committee, viz. The old brigade was to be considered defunct and a new one formed. . Management" to be by committee of five, tvirp representatives from the/Council and two from the brigade itself.. The brigade to appoint its own cantain, also that the plant of the late'brigade be purchased by the Council for the debt on it, viz., J837. The ; Council to have control of all the finance of the brigade. , Qn.the motion of Mr West the late Fire Brigade was considered defunct. Mr Snelson proposed that a new brigade bo organised on the lines proposed. Seconded by Mr Deards and carried.. ','. The following names \vefe'received*as l working, . members :— Messrs Ferguson,, Keys, Eawlins, Hanna, Dixon, Platt, Kerslake. Armstrong and Pirani, and honorary inembsrs:— Messrs Beck, Snelson, Rosb, Sinclair, ana Heaiy. ' The; M.ayor stated oneqftbe engines would arrive from Wellingion iha'few days, they would throw water 75 feet and at the rate of 30 gallons per minute. Tho members of the new brigade re-" Imained to make arrangement« for a start and the meeting adjourned.
