Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. FRIDAY, JANUARY 8. 1886. PROTECTION v. FREE TRADE.

t The following is an extract from a speech of Sir William Forwood, ex-prc-sid«nt of the Liverpool Board of Trad«, to the working then at Liverpool as chairman of the Saturday evening fre» concert : — " Let mo say a word to the working men I see here. Trade is bad yon say, and foolish men nru saying to you trTat it is caused by Freetrade; and will not be better till we adopt Protection. . . . . I have just anded from America ; trade is bad there, and they say it is caused by Protection, and they are beginning to cry out for Freetrade an the only thing that will restore their prosperity.; We munt be quite wrong here or they must be quite wrong m America. Lvt us see which it is. Trade is undoubtedly bad hT-re, I find on enquiry that the weekly paiyßhedts .of our manufactories are about 30 per, cent, lest than two or throe years ago. This means lower wages and. soiue man out of 'work, but there are fewTWorko ik the country closed, while m Amnrica m some district* thereia absolutely no trade at all. There are many towns m New Eaviland m which every factory is closed, and 20.000 to 30,000 men are out of work. The samo is true of the iron and coal industries of Pennsylvania, iv .Vmerica. At the present moment men arc starving m thei r tens of thousands, . . . . m America they can afford to make great experiments, because thoir resources are so groat that a few mistakes will not ruin them. They hare experimented with Protection on a grand scale and have stood its strain and wsight m a wonderful way; out it is now beariug down even m America, with all her great natural wealth."
