(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Napier, Tuesday. A" public meeting under the presidency of the Miiyor was held to-night to raise funds for the burnt out bush settlers. Over £250 was promised in the room, which will be added to over £100 previously raised by the Herald. Other lists will make a total of over £400. It is expected that £1000 will be raised locally, in additiou to £500 promised by the Government through Mr Ballance. Another, big fire has broken out at Makatoku. (juudrie's mill and all the workmen's dwellings are burnt, and further damage is feared. • Auckland. 1 Tuesday.
A remarkable discovery was made at the Ellerslie Racecourse by Mr Blair, a cordial, manufacture, who was engaged in collecting lemonade bottles from the booths. While in the passage leading to the ladies', room, he was astonished to see a carpet snake three feet long scuttling along the concrete. It is probable that the stranger arrived in the colony in a case of Australian .wine. A large number of cases of that beverage were opened at the grand stand during the recent meeting.
Auckland, Wednesday. John Meehan, covicted yesterday of indecent assault was sentenced to six, months imprisonment and 25 lashes' with a cat.
