LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Manawatu Standard will not be publisher} to-morrow (New Year's Day,) or Saturday, January 2nd, the latter day having been declared a public holiday. The catalogue for Mr F. R. Jatkson's next sale at St. Hill-street Yards is elsewhere advertised. The New Zealand Times estimates the loss by the Wellington fire at Irom 115,000 to £18,000. We remind our readers of Messrs Snelson and Co.'s special stock sale to take place on Saturday, at the Fitzherbertstreet Sale Yards at noon. The Taranaki Herald says that a white pine tree, discovered on the property of Mr W. Hill, Egmont-road, has been accurately measured. At the ground the girth is 5G feet, at four feet from the ! ground it is 42 feet, and seven feet from ] the ground 29 feet. If the following statement is trustworthy, they do not always do things bettor in France. A French paper not belonging to the Opposition says: — " The Government of the Republic took up a transport, which, sailing from Brest, was to touch at Algiers, in order to take 600 men to Tonquin. At Algiers, how ever, the captain of the transport could hear nothing of the troops in question, and he consequently put to sea and proceeded on his voyage without them. It seems that the War Office in Paris had ! forgotten to communicate with the Colony on the subject. As the Government had paid £20 a head for the transport of the 600 men, it loses .£12,000 by the blunder." Victoria's indebtedness per head is £32 12s Od, that of New South Wales £38 3s 6d. Queensland, £52 19a 6d, South Australia£49 i>s sd, and New Zealand £53 4s Bd. The Victorian general elections have been fixed for 20th February. The Post Office will be closed to-mor-row, New Year's Day. A meeting of Friendly Societie? Sports Committee will be held at the usual place this evening at 8 o'clock. We regret that through an unforeseen delay, we will not be able to issue the Standard Sheet Almanac tor 1886 until after the New Year. We had hoped to distribute it with to-day's copy of the paper, but have been prevented doing so very much to our annoyonce.
