The portion of the original Cook Strait cable where the break occurred, has been cat out j and is how in Dr Lemon's office. For only a few feet does the cable show any sign of deterioration, although it has been submerged some eighteen aud a half years. The portion actually broken "through appears to have been resting on a sharrj i'ledjje of rock, and to have been subjected tb\ chemical action, -ptofrably " that of copper, which has corroded and eaten through the iron and other materials foriniug the cable. This is equivalent to £45,600 per acre. A painful accident befell a child named George Wilton, aged two years, son of Mr Wilton, butcher, residing in Adelaideroad,, on Monday morning. The child, Avhose mother was on a *is!t, to Mastertw, was playing on a bank in the garden, . under which a boiler with some hot water in it was standing. The lid was taken off the boiler for a few minutes, when suddenly the little boy's aunti, who was engaged in washing clothes a few. yards away, heard screams, and turning round .found to her horror that the child had fallen into the boiler. The'in^aht was' at once rescued from hss dangerous position, and it was then ascertained that he had been severely burned about the left arm, face, and neck. Fortunately the child wore at the time a large bonnei, which was instrumental in saving his head and face to gome extent. A lady neighbour, with great presence of ttiind, quickly prepared and applied the usual remedies, and Dr Cole was immediately called in, with the result that the child is now progressing very favorabty toward recovery, the doctor being of opinion, that no fears for his life need now be eriterlained.— N.Z.
