AWAHURI RACES.
The Hack Race Meeting at Awahnri on Monday was a great success, fally 700 persons being on the ground. The weather was all that could be desired, and the Feildlng Brass Brand enlivened the proceedings with musical selections. Mr McLenaghan, of the Awahuri Hotel, had a booth on the ground, which was well patronised. There were also several other booths on the ground. Mr Abrahams, of Palmerston, was present with his totalisator, and succeeded m putting through the machine the respectable sum of £590 during the day. Great credit is due to the stewards and secretary (Mr A. McMillan) for the manner m which they conducted the meeting. Mr W. Durie acted as starter, and T. Lawton clerk of the course, and Mr A. McDonald clerk of the scales. Mr James King was very successful as handicapper while Mr T. King rendered valuable assistance to Mr McMillan, as assistant secretary. We are glad that the club has a substantial balance m hand after paying all expenses. The following is a i summary of the events : — Handicap Hurdles— Waitangi 1, Mountain Maid 2, Hyata 3. This was a ; good race, but Waitangi was too "warm" ) for his companions, and won as he liked. Maiden Race — H. Cameron's Alena 1. Several horses started for this but Alena was landed the winner. Handicap Race — Marksman 1, Volcano 2. This was the best race of the day. About 12 horses faced the starter the race resulting m Marksman being the winner. The Flying Handicap was won by Motareki from a field of about ten horses. The Consultation Race fell to Volcano, and the Scurry Race to Lazy, with Moana second. — Feilding Star.
