At the Feilding sports McManus won the two-mile walking match, R. Whisker the 200 yards race, McManus the one mile walking handicap, Belfit the quarter mile county handicap, and J. G. Crowe (Auckland) the Manchester handicap. The Marton paper has the following : — A sensational accident occurred in the Manawatu Gorge, about ten miles from Palmerston, on Thursday night, about 9 o'clock. Messrs Godfrey and Ross were driving in a dog-cart when one of the wheels got over the cliff. The occupants of the trap managed to jump out on to the road, but the trap and horse were precipitated into the river. The trap was smashed and the horse seriously injured. Having been cut loose from the trap, the animal was carried down the stream about three-quarters of a mile where he was rescued by the ferryman. The Government are inviting tenders for 11,000 sleepers. Further particulars will be found in advertisement. Messrs Stevens and Gorton's next stock sale at Feilding will be held on January 5th. Two hundred public houses, in London, were watched between the hours of 9 and 12, on a recent Saturday night, for the purpose of seeing how many persons entered them. The count showed that they were visited by 86,608 persons— men, women, and children — during the three hours. No fresh cases of sickness are reported on board the Dorunda, and the patients at present in quarantine are stated to be progressing favorably toward convalescence. The Wellington-Manawatu Railway line was opened a stage farther on Saturday, when trains were taken on to Pukerua, several miles beyond Plimmerton, A number of people took advantage or the extension to travel out to Pukerua. A Wellington paper states that there would appear to hare been very little disorderly conduct during the holiday. The only arrests made by the police since Saturday were two drunkards, both of whom were temporarily released on bail. Apropos of the sudden death of GenGeorge B. McClellan, we note that the New York Sun points out the singular fact that Gov. De Witt Clinton, Gov. Silas Wright, Gov. William L. Marcy, Gov. and Chief Sanford E. Church, and Gov. R. E. Fenton, all of New York State, dropped dead of heart disease, and under quite identical circumstances — each of them dying while reading a letter except Marcy, who was perusing Cowper's poems. The pupils of the Wellington Girls' High School recently held a swimming tournament at the Thorndon Baths when prizes for proficiency in swimming were contested for. The Rev George Hurst, of Burwood Sydney, a Wesleyan clergyman, lately died, and left property in New South Wales worth £37,811, and in Victoria worth £74,572, in all worth £112,383.
