About 100. of Dunn and Wilkie's men paid Palmerston a viiit for the Christmas holidays. We l«arn that so large a number of orderly and well behaved lot of men from a railway contract hare not before been m Palmarston at one time. We learn that some of the crops m the Sandon district ar* exceedingly heavy. On Saturday we were told of a paddock of oats that we were assured would yield about 90 bushels to the acre. At the Supreme Court sitting m Chamber* m Auckland last week, his Honor Mr Justice Gillies dismissed the anpJioalion m the case of Harding y. Biiller, for change of venue to Wellington, because it was addressed to " Judge Gillies," not to " Mr Justice Gillies." He remarked that it had of late become the custom to apeak of Judges of the Supreme Court and Judges of the Native Lands Courts and District Courts by the one title " Judg-e," and as he felt bound to uphold thn dignity of the Bench he should, m future, refuse to receive all applications so addressed. He did not care himself personally, but he must preserve the proper title of his office. Newspaper reporters and others might call him "Jude»," hut he would not allow it m an official document. Major M. Noake, N.Z. Militia, has been appointed a tnmnher of tho Board for Examination of Militia and Volunteer officers, Wanganui district. There have been some very disastrous fires m Hawke's Bay. At Takapau, Mr Drowrtr'a saw mill was destroyed, as also were several of the workmen's cottages m the vicinity of the mill. On Tnesday the atmosphere for many miles was ! dense with smoke from the bush fires m the locality of Makaretu and the Seventy-mile Bush.
