Caledonian sports and popular aports on Hagley Park were largely attended. The Christchurch Volunteers went for a field day to Waimakariri. About 350 men were present. Dunedin, Thursday. The Girls' High School broke up yesterday. The average attendance has been 184. Professor McGregor presided and delivered * long: addreso, m which he spoke of the progress made m the education of girls. He said that the solid discipline and knowledge of the nature of things that alone can fit them for life, as it is m an industrial democracy like ours, is withheld from many for fear that softness and grace may give place to hardness and grim selfassertion. He thought the exigencies of modern life demanded for girls a good education m all essential respects, similar to that of boys. The Premier also addressed those present. The dux of the school is sister to the dux of the boys' school. The Premier told the unemployed that plenty of Vfork would be provided to-day m city improvements near the railway. Mastebton, Thursday. The Borough Council on Monday night rejected a motion by the Mayor that the question of obtaining a watersupply be submitted to the ratepayers. The Engineer's report showed the Bcheuie would cost over £8000, or, with drainage, £20,000. The Council also decided to take over the management of the library. Auckland, Thursday. The Harbor Board refused the Freezing Company power to sub-let a portion of the reclaimed land. Twenty men of the unemployed, including the labor agitator, Garrard, have heen placed on the harbor defences at the North Shore. A large number will be taken on aa soon as the works are laid out. They were warned by Colonel Whitmore that there must be no shuf 1 fling or Government stroke, but real downright, steady work, otherwise they would be dismissed from the works. The city valuation increased £40,000 during th« past year. The case of forcible ejection at Rotorua ended m John Wilson, Arthur Stanley, and B. Douglas being committed for trial.
