At the inquest on Gilbert Jenkins, whose body was discovered m Puni Creek on Saturday, the evidence showed that de«eased had been suffering from delirium tremens. A verdict of found drowned was returned. Wellington, Monday. It is stated that Messrs Rylands and Son, of London and Manchester, and Messrs .T. and R. Merley, of Nottingham, manufacturers and warehousemen, are about to establish a New Zealand agency, and have selected Wellington as ttieir headquarters. The Government have requested Mr Joseph Clarke, of Sydney, brother to Sir William Clarke, to represent New Zealand at the funeral of the late MajorGeneral Scratchley. Sir Julius and Lady Yogel returned to Wellington this morning. During the passage from Lyttelton Sir Julius suffered severely from pain m his side and back, and Dr Grace, who was sent for on tho arrival of the Htnemoa, forbade his removal from the steamer until this afternoon. The body of Israel Bassenvale, who was drowned m the Waipa River, Mas terton, has been recovered. It is reported here that Mr Alexander Hirschberg, a farmer at Taratalii, is missing. He has not been seen for some time, and his friends are anxious. The Native Land Court at Taupo and Wanganui meets on January 14th. Tuesday. The lighthouse-keeper at Farewell Spit, reports that the ketch Comet, of Lyttelton, wont ashore on the spit about two miles from the lighthouse, during the night. All the crew landed m safety and the vessel is apparently uninjured. Auckland, Monday. H.MS. Nelson arrived at Russell on Saturday night from Sydney to take m coal for the voyage. She is expected here to morrow. The Zealandia paid pilotage and other port charges amounting to £80, under the prqtest of agents, alleging that she was still the San Franciso mail contract. She took what Sydney mails were left behind by the Alameda (five bags), for the conveyance of which Captain Webber received .£5 10s. Gisbornk, Monday. At the criminal sessions held to day before his Honor the Chief Justice there were five charges, of , .which the most serious was an attempt at abortion. Henry Hollard received two years tor altering the amount of a cheque, and one year for larceny as a bailee. A native boy got six months for stealing a horse. Tuesday. The Supreme Court sat till 3 o'clock this morning. John Depean, for attempt to cause abortion of a young girl, received five years' penal servitude. This finished the criminal business. Nelson, Monday. The governors of the Nelson College have appointed Miss' R.* M. Will, of Christchurch, and Mrs Snell, of Auckland, assistant mistresses at the Girls' College. «■ Timartt, Monday. At the criminal sessions of the Supreme Court to-day, before Judge Williams, true bills were found m all the five cases. John Hill, for horse stealing, was sentenced to two years ; Geo. Vale, for false pretences, was acquitted ; James Willis, for forgery, was also acquitted. Lyttleton, Monday. The sailing boat Water Lily, which left Lyttelton on Sunday to take part m the Akaroa regatta, was wrecked at Le Bon's Bay. The wind being adverse, the crew anchored her and went ashore, and during their absence the boat was wrecked on the beach and broke up. Christchuroh, Monday. At a trial sail of the five yachts that will compete at the Lyttelton Regatta, Mr Westlake's new boat distanced the others both with and against the wind by two hundred and twenty yards m two miles. Colonel Lean lias ordered all the Volunteers m the North Canterbury district to turn out on Wednesday, the anniversary of the province, for a fiald day on the banks of the Waimakariri. Tuesday. On Saturday, a two-year-old child of Mr Edward Collison, was killed by falling into the gearing of a horse-power engine at Seaneld. Dunedin, Monday. TKe Evening Star states that Mr Macandt'ew is to be called to the Upper House immediately.
