Mr C. W. Robert wag to-day looking out for suitable premises m the Square, m which to carry on his fast increasing business, as he will shortly be m a posi tiori to go extensively into the manufacture of work m all branches of the trade, m eluding military, ecclesiastical, civil, and ornamental embroidery, and lace work of any kind required. A thoroughly competent female hand from the old established firm of Hobson & Co., (London), is now on her way out, having been engaged by Mr Robert, and is expected to arrive by the direct steamer Tainui, on the 20th inst., m Wellington. Mr Williams, our new- chemist, made | a start on Saturday last, and was kept quite busy till a late hour supplying customers. A meeting of the Feilding Small Farm Association was held on Friday last, when about 60 members were present, and about 40 others represented. It was resolved that members be entitled to draw four allotments m all, three on behalf of friends with his own application. The allotment of sections will take place on the 29th of January next. The N.Z. Clothing factory notify the arrival of a consignment of cricketing costumes. It is said that the show of diamonds at Long Branch was finer than ever :his year. One of the wealthiest, most "diamonded, 1 ' and most gorgeously apparelled ladies is the wife of a New York barber, who has made a fortune m stock speculation. Her husband still scrapes chins, notwithstanding the fact that .his wife has " society" aspirations. Most of his customers are brokers and railroadmen. He picks up valuable 11 pom's" from them, and for that reason insists on remaining m business. Another woman who wears splendid toilets and jewels is the wife of a Brooklyn baker. Her husband, starting m life%s a journeyman kneader of dough, hit upon a kind of bread that pleased New York's palate, and now he is a millionaire, lives m great style, and maintains one of the handsomest turnouts on the coast. The ton of quartz excavated from tha Anderson Reef will be put up and forwarded to Palmerston to-morrow, m charge of Maearthy (carter). Mr Anderson came down to Palmerston to-day. We hear that it is his opinion that the reef he has arrived at is over four feet thick. A singular feature of a fire m Sydney was the remarkable revelation disclosed m the excited statement of the occupant of two dwelling houses m Katherinestreet, adjoining a block of burning Btores, who cried out, " Don't let the fire get at my place, for there is a lot of spirits there." An immediate search of the premises revealed the fact that a quantity of liquor was stored m the dwellings, together with a complete out fit for a private distillery. The police at once pounced upon the lossce, who proved to be David John Solomons, and* took ' him to the Glebe police station, where he is now detained, together with the distilling plant and appliances co unexpectedly discovered,
