An art gallery has been established m Paliuerston, admission to which is free. Host Walkley, of the Commercial Hotel is the enterprising promoter of this laud-' able scheme, and his collection of " Almanac" views displayed and arranged with artistic taste m one of the public rooms of the hotel is well worth inspec. tion. The Gazette notifies the appointment of Lieutenant-Colonel Stapp, .Major Lockett, and Captain J. R. Somerville as members of the board of examination of Militia and Volunteer officers for the Wariganui district. ! Nothing daunted by the vexatious cracking of their crucibles at the smeltiug experiment at Mr David Murray's foundry on Wednesday last, Messrs Basaott, Beaven, and others of the party, spent all day yesterday over another test at the same place. On this occasion they were perfectly successful, so far at least as the' perfection of the experiment and efficiency of the'teafc wore concerned. That," however, is all that we know, and consequently all that we are ahle to tell. The members of the party have tnado up iheir minds not to disclose the results of any further tests that they may make. We believe the reason for the reticence displayed is that doubt has been cast upon results previously published, and as the gentlemen m question are spending their own time and money m order to satisfy themselves, they do not considftr they aro under any obligation to Bay auy thing about it.— Chronicle. .
