Sir George Grey has received a tele- < gram from the President of the Liberal Association at Invercargill, inviting him to be present at a meeting at Invercargill | m reference to the depression m the agricultural interest. He will be unable to accept. Invbucargill, Thursday. The member ofGr Battery who was finful last weak for non-attendance at a Government parade, was again charged yesterday with the same offence. He admitted the charsre, and was fined thirty shillings, or m default seven days' iin prisonment. In the application for habeas corpns of Mr J. Crowe, his Honor ruled that he could -not proceed liil Judge Ward, who j sent the bankrupt to prison, had received notice of application, which was therefore adjourned. In the appeal case Totnlinson v. McCullocb, his Honor said he would like to have a copy of the evidence from the Resident Magistrate on which he decided that applicant used ' indecent language, for which he was sentenced to imprisonment, within | hearing of passers-by. Appeal will be taken when the Magistrate's notes are furnisued. A second jury empanelled to hear th« charge of arson against Bridget Campbell, appeared m court this morning, and stated they were unable to agree. They were then discharged, accused being admitted to bail and ordered to come up at the next sessions. Napier, Thursday The oriminal business at the Supreme Court concluded yesterday morning. The calender comprised one case ot house breaking, one of arson, one of bu*-" glary." The three prisoners m thea^cases were found guilty, and sentenced to respectivoly to two years, $hree years, and four years. The grand jury found no bill m the case of indecent assault and m one of li'.mae-breiiking.^ A verdict of not guilty was returned m the case of a Native charged with perjury, and the Crown Prosecutor withdrew a similar charge against another Maori. In a case m which two Natives were charged with obstructing a surveyor, the Chief Justice directed the jary to discharge the pri-: sonars. Balclutha, Thursday. The railway from Balclutha to Romahapa will be opened on Tuesday. The Borough Council held a special meeting to-day, and resolved to invite Mr Macaudrew, M.H R M to open the line, and to entertain him and a few guests to dinner. It was .resolved to proclaim the day a half-holiday. Much interest is taken m the matter, and it is expected there will be a large demonstration. Donedin, Thursday. The annual shooting of the Rifle Association began yesterday, 80 competitors taking part m the first match. The scoring was good. In the case of Stewart Dawson'n claim for goods pillasred out of plaintiff's box on the voyage of one of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamers, plaintiff was nonsuited by the Resident Magistrate, on the grounds that the Company were indemnified by printed conditions.
