It is' currently reported that the representatives of a syndicate interested m Cornwall's claims over lands now held at Samoa by McArthur and Co. proceeded \o Samoa by the Mararoa with the intention of occupying certain of the lands m dispute, and are resolved to hold possession against ejectment. The statement current is to the effect that the syndicate is forme.l to prosecute these claims, and have taken these means to assert their assumed rights. A. laundrcsi was prosecuted for a breach of the Employment of Females Act. The case was dismissed, the Bench being doubtful whether the act applied to laundresses. The Mararoa took £56,000 worth .of bullion shipped by the Bank of New , Zealand, and £25,000 m sovereigns, shipped by the National Bank. Thursday. Information has been received of the death of a settler at Henderson, named John Malcolm, under singular circumstances. He was taking a hide from a decomposed carcase of a bullock, when he took ill and died, it is believed from blood poison. A private letter states that Mr A. Campbell, late of Tauranga, was tomahawked, by the nativeß of New Ireland on Sept. 24th. Wellington, Wednesday. During the visit of the steamer Hinernoa to the Freeh Pass several specimens of different kinds of New Zealand fish were caught, and it is intended to send these to'the Colonial Exhibition m London. A large proportion- of the specimens brought back are at present kept alive m tanks on deck, and an effort will be made to take some Homo m that condition, although no great confidence is felt of the success of the experiment. The dead specimens to be sent Home are to be frozen m blocks of solid ico, as being tho host method of preserving thiMr natural characteristics for any length of time. With reference io the removal of the Central Prison from the present site, the Premier has written to the Mayor-elect that it has been decided to leave the question to the consideration of the full Cabinet. At the Supreme Court m Banco this afternoon, the case of J. S. Heid v. W. K. Bishop was called on. The appellant who has for the last 10 years published Bradshaw's Guide, applied for an injunction to prevent the respondent from publishing Bishops-Bradshaw's Guide. At the onset a preliminary objection was taken, that sufficient notice had not been given to Mr Bishop, which the judge upheld, and refused the motion, the question of costs being reserved. A re-union of the congregation of St. John's Presbyterian Church was held last evening to celebrate the rebuilding of th»3 church destroyed by fire. The financial statement showed that £7,334 had been received as insurance and subscriptions, while the cost of building and purchase of additional ground amounted to £8329. Two prisoners were committed for trial to-day for the January sessions. They are, James Dungan, accused of stealing a watch and chain from tho Prebbleton Hotel, and George Barrett, a young man, charged with breaking into the Oxford Hotel last Friday night and robbing the till of Is 6d. Thames, Wednesday. The returns from the Cnmbria mine for the last four weeks' operations is 5599* ounces of gold. The directors have, declared a dividend amounting m tho aggregate to £12,600.
