Choral Society.
In response to a notice inserted m the Standaud calling a meeting of persons interested m the formation of a Choral Society m Palmerston, the following: ladies and gentlemen attended at the. Bank Chambers last evening 1 :—Me<daraes Snelson, Hoe, Leigh, Bell, and Watson-; Miss MeKenzie; and Messrs Snelson, Cohen, Watson, Dungiin, Hawkins, Shortt, Bett, Pii-ani, E. Johnstone,. H.iybittle, K. Johnston, liaveh, Keeling, Grimes, Hamilton, Person, and Heal}'. Mr Snelson was voted to the chair, and having briefly explained the nature of the meeting, asked those present to express their views or make what suggestions they micht deem desirable to have adopted. Mr Healy acted as Secretary, pro. tern. After some general conversation, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Healy, seconded by Mr Cohen— That a choral society be formed m Palmerston. The question of a pro isional committee was then discussed and the following ultimately suggested to act as such were proposed, and the motion resolved upon unanimously — Messrs Snelson, Watson, R. Johnston, Cohen, Bett, Hawkins, Kendall, Healy, and all the ladies present Some conversation took place with some of the members of the Dramatic Club present who took it for granted that thu new society would clash with theirs, but such an idea was clearly shown by the chairman of iha meeting to be a decidedly orroneous one, as the proposed choral society would be a purely musical one and also one which would be to a great extent composed ot Indies who would nut oa tho other hand cave to join a dramatic and musicial society combined. Mr Cohen also pointed out the error oO supposing that the intended choral society would m any way oppose the interests' of the Dramatic Club, and he did not see why the Dramatic Society should not continue to be a musicial society as heretofore. The class 'of music used by each would be altogether different. The musical renditions of < the Dramatic Society, so far, he believed, j had been* supplied by gentlemen only and he could not see why the club should not continue to give the same kind of music m future. As far as he himself was concerned, he would most willingly render the Dramatic Club any assistance m his power, although belonging to the Choral Society. The proposed committee remained to discuss matters m connection with the society, the others present leaving.
