The Terawhiti Reefs.

OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. William Fox. the well-known prospector, has, at the request of theMinister of Mines, forwarded Mr Larnach the following report of his inspection of the reefs at Terawhiti :— Wellington, 2nd Deeeiub^r, 1885. To the Hon. Mr Larnach, Minister of Miuea. Sir — I have the honour to report to you that upon my arrival on the top of the hill of the GoWen Crown claim at Terawhiti most of the visitors were coming back: I went down the shaft about ?Oft and got some stone from the reef running east and west. The reef is about 15 or 1 Binches wide. I put the: atone aside. I went, dovvn a stope Isft and took out some stone, which I left aside. I went into a drive running north, and got some stone - from there also. I then went into a drive running north-west, where they were sinking a new stope and_took 'some stoue^ from the drive near there. I then returned to the top and crushed each sample separately and found them all gold bearing, and sliould'run at the rate of 2ozs to 2£oas to the ton. I then went mto a tunnel which runs throngh the -lull and saw the old workings. I got' some stone ; froin. there which I found to be goldbearing. Qn the north-west end of the til .nel (.here is a large- blow of slooo on the surface, which I think is a turnover from a large reef. I also got a rubble on the western Bide, at the mouth of the tunnel, which there ia a little* gold m. I also visited the Wealth of Nations ax)A the-Welcbme. The latter claim has a good tunnel running north and south to catch a small reef "running east and west from the western aide of mountain. The slate m those claims looks gold bearing. In,iny opinion it would be advisable on" the part of the shareholders 4n this district to get a boring machine and sink 300 or 400 ft on the ..western side near to the sea level, as "the Terawhiti hill, have been ofc volcanic eruption and very much shaken, and by. boring on.. tt, lower level I think the country is more solid, to hold reef s.— l have, &c, William Fox.
