His sire, the pare .imported Clydesdale horse, •Fowler's Wallace, bred by Mr Donald McKinley, Wouldham Hall, near Gloucester, out of a pure Clydesdale mare, bred by Mr J: N. Fleming, Campr. ' belton, Scotland ; her sire, the celebrated horse Lofty Wallace, gained several first prizes before leaving the Old Country. Maggie was bred by Mr Sutherland, Taieri, Otago, out of a Napoleon mare, by Sir William Wallace (imported). Sir William Wallace bred by William Anderson, Esq., ' Kirkmichael, Ayrshire, out of Brisk, by Garibaldi. As a yearling took first prize at Maybole, Kirkmichael, and Glasgow, and second at Ayr. As a two-year-old, second at Ayr and Glasgow, and also second at the Highland Society's Show held that year at Edinburgh ; and when only three days landed m Otago took second prize against horses of all agos at the Taieri, although only 2£ years old. Totara, the sire of Longlands, winner of the Great Autmnn Handicap, April, 1878, and 1879 ; also Volunteer, second m the Champagne Stakes, and ran a dead heat with Mata for Queen's Plate m Dunediu, and won the Timaru Maiden Plate, 1£ miles, m 2in. 45£5., and Flying Stakes, £ mile, m lm. 17^8., at the Wellington Jockey Club Meeting, 1880 ; atao Merlin, winner of the Spring Handicap at Wangnnui ; also Totara, wiuii' r of the Rangitikei Hunt Club Steeplechase, Waverley Handicap Hurdle Rac>-, and Manawatu Handicap Hurdles at Palmerston Diomedes himself is the winner of the Waugiumi Welter Weight-for-age Hurdle Race, beating Reform, New Yvar, Dhudeen, ParneM, and Christmas ; won the Turakina Handicap Htudlee, beating a large field ; and ran a good third for the Wanganui Grand National Steeplechase, carrying 12st 71bs., giving the winner, Ruahine, Ist sl!>s., ;>ud the second horse, Diiudeeu, 2st 511)8., thereby showing that he is a weight carrier, and has exceptionally good staying power. Diomedes was awarded first prize at the Wanganui A. and P. Association's Show as a sire best calculated to improve the breed of Raddle horses. Diomedes is a rich bay with black points, standing 16$ hands high, with immense bone and muscle, good action, is 7 years old, and is considered to be one of the btst cross-coucitry horses m New Zealand.
