School Committee.
The above committee met la^t even ing. Present — Messrs Leary, Stewart, Hos king, Wright, and Hawkins. COKRHSPOXDENCE. Note from Mr Watson re holiday 9th November. Mr Leary granted it. Letter from Mr Smith, assistant, statins; he had sent m his resignation, and asking for a testimonial. Moved by Mr Stewart, seconded by Mr Hawkins — That a testimonial be granted, and the secretary prepare it. Memo from Board with Board's cheque for contractor. It was stated that fencing; at Terrace End cannot be don« owing to want of funds. Memo from Board stating holidays commence on lltli December, and resume on 17th January, 188G, also stating that committee election will take place m April, but audit must he sent m for year ending 31st December. . Proposed by Mr Hawkins, seconded by Mr Stewart— That a sample of ink be procured from Walter Su tiling, 91 Manchester-street, Cluistchurch. Resolved— That correspondence be received. Mr Leary read his lettera to the Board. Mr Hawkins moved, and Mr Hosking seconded — That the Chairman write to the Board asking- for a grant m aid of fencing and other improvements at Terrace End School. The committee had some conversation < about providing prizes and a treat for the schools. [ Proposed by Mr Hawkins, seconded by Mr Wright — That on account of tho small amount of funds m hand, the committee do not see their way to give either prizes or a school treat this year. — Carried. Mr Leary stated stated that Mr Ferguson had kindly consented to give a magic lantern entertainment towards building; shelter sheds for the schools. Resolved — That the hearty thanks of the committee be granted to Mr Ferguson f»r his kind offer, and they will avail themselves of it on first week of February. CENTRAL SCHOOL. Report from Mr Watson read and received. Resolved — That Chairman attend to requirements. Sir, — I .have the honour to enclose my monthly report : — Average — Roll for past month, 335-2; attendance, 246-7, highest, 272 ; number scholars admitted, 21 ; number scholars left, 14; number scholars now on roll, 336 ; number times school open, 48. As will be seen by the above figures, the attendance is increasing rapidly, although not what it should he, as quite 26 per cent,, ot the average roll number are daily absent. Still the steady progress of the school will be seen by a comparison with figures for the corresponding weeks of 1884, which give an average of 215"5 as against 24G*7 for 1885. Miss Schofield resumed her duties on the 23rd Dec. after her absence m Patea. It would be advisable during the coming vacation to have some of the pipes leading from the boy's " offices" attended to. They are choked up causing a disagreeable overflow. I have the honor, &c, Francis E. Watson TERRACE END SCHOOL. Report irom Terrace End School, read and received. Sir, — I have the honor to submit the following monthly report of the Terrace End School. Numbers. — Numbers on roll at beginning of month, 78, G6, 144 ; admitted during month, 5, 6, 11 ; total, 83, 72, 155 ; number left during month, 0, 4, 4 ; number now belonging, 83, 08, 151 ; average attendance for month, 97, (an increase of 13 on last month) ; highest attendance, 111. Staff. — Miss Astbury having resigned the position as pupil teacher, the school has been one teacher short for past three weeks. Requisites. — Four dozen inkwells are required for school. Repairs. — The locks on both closets are out of repair and will require replacing. Two of th* large windows are out of order and canfiot be ■ opened or closed. The tank has started leaking apparently m three places ; (Mr Munro the contractor has promised to have it emptied and repaired during the holidays.) Improvements. — I woald again beg to bring under your notice the desirabity of doing something towards improving the approach to the school and also towards erection of fence. As the Board would not grant the amount applied for, perhaps a smaller sum might be granted if applied for to do the work on a modified plan. — I have the honor, &c, D. H. Guthrie. P.S.— The blinds oo ordered have been hung and work satisfactorily. Re auditing.— Resolved— That the name of Mr King be Sent to the Board as auditor of the committee's accounts. Accounts considered : — Berkenshaw, eight weeks' cleaning, £2 8s ; Miller, 14s; Leary, 5a ; Jones, 3s ; Sutton, 4s ; Montague, £3 10s ; Venn, 4s 6d ; Park, £2 3s 4d. Proposed by Mr Stewart, seconded by Mr Hosking — That a price list of school requisites be obtained from Messrs Welch and Co., to be submitted to the next meeting of committee. The Secretary stated that the ink purchased from Mr Park had cost the committee 14s per gallon, the price offered by the Christchnrch firm was 4s 6d, or two hundred per cent, less than Mr Park charged, and the ink had been supplied to the Christchurch schools, for 7 years past.
