THE OUTLOOK IN THE SOUTH ISLAND.
We are glad to see that there are signs that the depression which has so long prevailed m the Middle Island is beginning to disappear. The address of the Chairman at the quarterly meeting of the Christchurch Chamber of Commerce, is decidedly of a hopeful character. The farmers are said to be m good heart over the prospects of the hay and grain harvests, the small rise m the pride of wool at the last London sales has revived the spirit of the runholders, and trade, though quiet, is represented as being sound. Altogether matters there are apparently m an " improved condition when compared with that which existed a few months ago, when Mr Montgomery said m Parliament that the people were " without hope." It is certainly, as the Auckland Herald observes, far from gratifying to any portion of the colony to hear of the settlers m any provincial district struggling with adversity, and to a true colonist it must always be a pleasure to hear of brighter days | dawning upon those of his brethren who have been subjected to loss op suffering.
