T,I PUREBRED CLYDESDALE HORSE Watchman. riTATOHMAN, foaled Ist November, VV 1878, and is now rising five -years old ; sire Fowler's Wallace, dam Masgie ; is a rich browu, is I<?£ hands high, has a clean, flinty bone and nice hatr, and is very active. His sire, the pure imported Clydesdale horse, Fowler's Wallace, bred by Mr Donald McKinley, W.mldham Hall, near G loucester, out of a pure Clydesdale mare, bred by Mr J. N. Fleming, Cainpbelton, Scotland ; her sire, the celebrated horse Lofty Wallace, gained several first prizes before leaving the Old Country. Maggie was bred by Mr Sutherland.. Taieri, Otago, out of a Napoleon mare, by Sir William Wallace (imported). Sir William Wallace bred by William Anderson, Enq., Kiukmichael, Ayrshire, out of Brisk, by Garibaldi. As a yearling took first prize at Maybole, Kirkmichael, and Glasgow, and second at Ayr. As a two-year-old, second at Ayr and Glasgow, and also second at the Highland Society's Show held that year at Edinburgh ; and when only three days lauded m Otago took second prize against horses of all ages at the Taieri, although only "2\ years old. DIOMEDES is by Totara, out of Plover, by Sir Hercules. Totnra is by old Diomedes, out of Wainiea, by Sir Hercules, out of Flora McTvor, by Emigrant. Old dioinedes by Hesperus, out of Diomedie by Weatherbit. Old Dioinedes was the sire of Kapapo, Malvina, Economy, and Parawheniia. WAiinea, the dam of Manuka, Papapa, Puriai, and Wainui, all ot whom have won several important races on the turf. Plover, by Sir Hercules ; Plover, the dam of Maiviua, Hercules, Dan O'Connell, and other fast horses. Totara, the sire of Longlauds, winner of the Great Autumn Handicap, April, 1878, and 1879 ; also Volunteer, second m the Champagne Stakes, and ran a dead heat with Mat a for Queen's Plate m Duuedtu, and won the Timaru Maiden Plate, 1£ miles, m 2in. 45£s:, and Flying Stakes, J mile, m lin. 17£s., at the Wellington Jockey Club Meeting, 1880 ; also Merlin, winner of the Spring Handicap at Wanganui ; also Totara, witnur of the Rangitikei Hunt Club Steeplechase, Waverley Haudicap Hurdle Race, and Manawatu Handicap Hurdles at Palmerston Diomedes himself is the winner of the Wauganui Welter Weight-for-age Hurdle Race, beating Reform, New Year, Dhudeen, ParueH, and Christmas ; wou the Turakina Handicap Hardhs, beating a large field ; and ran a good third for the Wauganui Grand National Steeplechase, carrying 12st 71bs., giving the winner, Ruahine, Ist dibs., »hhl the second horse, Dhudeen, 2st 51bs., thereby showing that he is a weight carrier, and has exceptionally good staying power. Dioinedes was awarded iirst prize at the Wanganui A. and P. Association's Show as a sire best calculated to improve the breed of saddle horses. Dioinedes is a rich bay with black points, standing 16$ hands high, with immense bone and muscle, good action, is 7 years old, and is considered to be one of the beßt cross-country horses m New Zealand.
