Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on tne West Coast. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1885. COLONIAL INDUSTRIES.
Referring to the establishment of industries, Mr Wakefikld, M.H.K., when speaking at the demonstration* last Saturday, on the oc asion of laying the foundation stone of the Wellington Woollen Company's Mill* observed that industries of that description were a financial question, and that moneyed men should invest their capital m such enterprises, instead of lending it out on mortgage at heavy rates of interest. If the moneyed men m the Colony showed their faith m their fellow-colonists, and trusted to the making of fair profits out of such enterprises, they would soon have plenty of manufactures m the Colony without any Government assistance. He remembered the time when they had to import mutton to Canterbury, and when they could only get it once a month from Australia. Now we were sending 800,000 sheep every year to England. The time was close at hand when New Zealand would be a great manufacturing Colony.
