An "urgent" telegram was despatched from Wellington to-day at 10.40. ieached Palmeraton at 10.50., and its destination (Standard office) at 11.15. Ten minutes from Wellington to Palmerston, distance about ,100 . miles, twenty-five minutes from telegraph station Palmerston to Standard office, distance less 1 than 100 yards. Talk about "urgent" telegrams after that, and the metaphor about words flashed on the wings of the lightning. At the Dunedin races yesterday Evertou Lad won the Grand stand Handicap, Apropos the Criterion Stakes, Rubezahl the Tapuna Park Handicap, and Billy the Consolaiion Race. A Westport telegram states that a girl named Martha Kerr, aged twelve years, drank tea m which she had soaked matches, fatal results ensuing. At the Island Bay (Wellington) races yesterday Maccnroni won the Hurdle Handicap, Capsize the Flying Stakes, Life Buoy the Local Handicap, Adminstrator the Te Aro Handicap, Clogs second. Nelson third, Lock Lomond the Local Hurdles, Capsize the Grand Stand Handicap, Nelson second, Rumour third, Ugly Buck the Selling Race. £4500 was put: through the totalisators. A meeting of the Blue Ribbon Society will be held at Bunnythoroe to-morrow evening, commencing at 7 p.m.
