A Visit to Terawhiti.
(Wellington Evening Press.'] We found everyone busy. A raid had been made on all the tin dishes and p mnikins m the camp, and amateur miners were " washing up " fine stuff from the heap at the mouth of the mine aud notwithstanding want of skill some remarkably good prospects was obtained. The stuff brought rip from the mine was washed out—that is. the fine part and that which crumbled by the action of ' the watc, for no crushing »was done—"one lot by Mr U. Mage, another by Mr I. Plimmer, and the other by a greenhor». In each case, though only about half a dishful was put" through, \quite a quantity of gold was found. The be^t result, however, was obtained by a visitor who went down the mine and brought up some quartz m his hat. The results of the washings were shown to the Minister, who expressed surprise at tbo quantity of gold obtained from such j ■maillots of stuff, as probably quite as much or more remained - m the solid Rtone which was not dealt with at all, except to be picked over for ." specimens." One gentleman, who apparently spoke , with some experience, gave as his dictum that the results obtained from the soft stuff alone represented about 6ozs to the ton. Of course, I can give no opinion as to th« correctness of this calculation but perhaps the best idea I can give of it is that the resort of the hatful of stuff was"a 'yield of gold that would cover the surface of a sixpence. The satisfactory part of tho nfTnir was that whereever a dishful of quartz was taken from (and visitors could go and. get it from wli*t part of the etono they choose), gold could be washed out of it and gold, could be seen m the solid stone.
