The case against Oscar Johnson, the pupil teacher, accused of assaulting a girl at the Lower Heithcote school was investigated to-day at the Resident Magistrate's Court, when the information was dismissed without the defence being gone into. It is expected Sir Julius Yogel will return to Wellington m about a fortnight. There is considerable feeling m the corps over j the matter. Captain Dargaville has stated that if the men wish him to resign he will do so. Wellington, Thursday. A young man named James Wilson, a seaman on the barque Helen Denny, was drowned m the harbor this afternoon. He visited a neighbouring vessel with two mates for the purpose of borrowing a boat, and while the latter had gone to get a bucket to bale out with, deceased fell off the wharf, and as he did not rise, it is supposed he struck the fender. The I body was subsequently recovered. Napier, Friday. Major Sculley, late Inspector of Police, has been presented with a purse of over 300 sovereigns, as a mark of appreciation of his services. Dunedin, Friday, Mr John McLaren, an old identity resident, while playing at bowls on the Cumberland-street Green was seized with a fit, and died within five hours. Blenheim, Friday. The prosecutions arising from the collision of the Waihi and Mohaka was hearj to-day. Captain Eckford, of the Mohaka, was charged with failing to blow his whistle as he went down the river, and was fined 40s, and £2 9s costs. Notice of appeal was " given. Captain Manning, of the Waihi, on a similar charge, was adjourned until Tuesday.
