T. Simes and Co., wool brokers, have suspended payment, owing to heavy land investments made by the firm inT the colonies. The liabilities are under i? 200,000. The Sp&rlsman^ referring to the negotiations for an Australian Eleven to visit England next year, thinks it ' would be better to postpone the visit until ISB7. The British Government have definitely decided to annex Bur* t-mah. x The French Presidential election will take place on the 11th Dec M. Jules Grevy is almost certain to be re-elected. It is reported that the .Premier of Canada will confer with the 'English postal authorities regarding the transmission of English mails for Australia by the Canadian Pacific Railway^ to connect with a fast line of steamers, as proposed by the Dominion Government The firm of John Elder and Co., shipbuilders and engineers, Glasgow, have been converted into a company. Nov. 25. The French troops m Tonquin under General Braiks have captured Langson. There is an increasing opinion that a revival of trade, which has been so depressed lately, is imminent. The elections are, proceeding quietly. The Hon. Colonel Stanley, Secretary of State for the Colonies, has been returned unopposed. Mr J- E. Gorst has been re-elected for Chatham. Thirty- five Tories have been elected and thirty-two Liberals. Among the latter G. Otto Trevelyan and Mr Campbell Bannerman were returned unopposed; whilst Sir A. D. Hayter and Mr J. Passmore Edwards have been defeated for Bath and Salisbury respectively. The Right Hon. A/ W. Peel, Speaker, has been elected. In Ireland two ParnelUte candidates have been returned. The . nomination of Miss Helen Taylor; has been refused. Mr W. H. Smith, Secretary for War, has been returned by a majority of over 3000. The Tory vote has been, relatively strong m, many of the other contests, and appears to be increasing. The Radicals have carried the day at Birmingham. Abater election returns announce that Lord Randolph ChurcKill has been defeated at Birmingham, the Liberal candidate securing the seat by a T majority of^73 Votes; Mr Joseph Chamberlain and the Hon. W. H. Smith (Secretary f or War) have been elected by a large majority. Colonel Stanley (Secretary for the Colonies/ was returned unopposed for Blackpool. The Conservatives have gained twelve seats from the Liberals, and the latter have taken one from the Con* servatives, leaving a net Conservative gain of eleven seats. Up to the present 36 Conservatives and 33 Liberals have been returned.
