Wanganui Education Board.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was hefd yesterday, whe:i there were present— Messrs Watt (m the chair), Baker, Bridge, Fry, and Rev. Mr Ross. Appointments Committee.— The following business was transacted m committee, and reported at the. commencement of the ordinary meolin<r: — Bunnythorpe : Letter, respecting Mrs Boddy ; • resolved that the Board could not depart from its previous decision. — ForMing: The committee accepted Mrs Noddy's services as a teacher, and aske I that the- Inspector deiine her duties ; resolved that the Inspector's memo on the matter be forwarded to the c-unmittee.—Pal-merston North : Mr Smith's resignation was accepted ; Mr T. B. Insell's application for the appointment was held over ; Mr .T. P. Gradwell made application for situation as teacher of elocution, aud it - was resolved that a reply be given to the effect that no vacancy occurred ; Resolved to invite applications for the post of assistant master, Mr Insoll's letter to be referred to the Inspector. — Olaki : The committee wrote respecting the removal ol.fche pupil teacher ; resolved to reply that Norman Crabb would be removed at the end o£ the quarter, the vacancy to be filled by the Inspector and Executive. Terrace End : The committee wrote advising the Board of the absence of the pupil teacher'; resolved that Miss Ast- . bury 's resignation be accepted when it arrived, and the Inspector be authorised to. fill the vacancy. Finance. — The Secretary reported that the General Account had a credit balance of £1928 the building account was overdrawn £1915 and there were liabilities , amounting to £1531.— Total £3446. Holidays. — After some discussion it | was resolved that the holidays commence on the 14th December and the schools re open on the 18th January. It was decided that the Board should meet on the 22nd Dec. and that the Board's officers should have a holiday from the 24th to the 7th January, the offices being closed during that period. . . Palmerston North.— Mr Smith having resigned applied for a certificateGranted. Beaconsfield.— The committee recommended that Mr Delaney's case- should be reconsidered by the Board. They had had Mr Delaney for some years : and he had given good results while there. He had only been at Croften tor 8 months and had hardly had a fair trial there. If that committee wanted anew, teacher it would gladly take him.— The chairman considered that the Beaconsfield committee should be. told to mind their own • business. Resolved to acknowledge the receipt of the letter. Foxton. — The architects report on the waterclosets which then considered should be replaced at a cost of about £20.— Resolved that a copy of the letter be forwarded to the Foxton committee, and that . it be pointed- out to them-- that gross- mismanagement' hud been practised m the past with regard to the building of the closets and the neglect shown m looking after them. , Mr, Stewart.— The late Whenuaknra teacher who had been dismissed peremp- ] torily asked for an audience of the Board to explain matters. He asked the Board to reconsider the' matter,- and give him one more chance. The remarks regarding his state on taking over the school had been very much overdrawn. Mr Stewart having withdrawn from the room, Mr Baker spoke m favor of giving him another chance by sending him to' conduct the Upper Taonui School for the next month by which time the Board would have some idea of what he could do. This suggestion was put into^ a resolution, and Mr Stewart was informed of the Board's decision, and also that his future would depend oh his own conduct while there. Scholarship Regulations. — The Educatioii;Department wrote stating thatclause 2of the k ßoards regulation was not m consonance with clause 51 of the Act ; it was resolved that the Board agree to alter the regulation. Education Reports. — The Department requested early attention to the annual reports for the Minister of Education. The letter pointed out that school committees were .required- to -furnish- the Board with a report, including art audited statement of accounts for the year ending December 31st, 1885 — Mr Bridge , mpved that the committees be requested to forward the names of auditors willing to audit their books, and that m all cases where this is not done' Mr Brown should audit them here. Carried. Foxton. — Mr Forsyth, m reply to a letter requesting him to resign, wrote acknowledging the receipt of the letter. — The chairman said that Mr Thvnne, chairman of the Foxton Committee, had written a long letter respecting the mat-j ter, but he had not mentioned that he was authorised to act for the committee. He ' (Mr Watt) thought no notice should be taken of the matter.— Mr Baker did not consider that they were called on to consider, the -letter if it was not "backed up by the committee.— Messrs Bridge and Ross were inclined to think that the letter should.be considered until, on its being produced, it was shown that the writer had not signed it as chairman of • the committee. The chairman said that on receipt of it he authorised the Secretary to the effect that it woiild have been better had he forwarded the opinions of the committee to the, .committee of the Board instead of his own, and, m reply to this, Mr Thynne had sent another letter signed m the same way, but not for the committee. This being the ease, it .was considered by the Board that no notice-could be taken of the letters, nor yet of a reply which Mr Bindon had forwarded: It was resolved that the Board ..recommend to the committee that Mr Forsyth rece ; ve three months' notice, a reply to be received by the 7th of Dec, a nd, the.. Executive Committee to- have power to deal with the case . V Campbelltown. — Application for a porch, £15, and an additional teacher, Teacher granted but porch declined; Upper Taonui —Leave "of absence granted to the teacher, Mr Skipped owing to ill health. : . Absence.— Leave of absence was granted to Mr Stevens from the board's, meeting, he being m Napier at present. Palmerston North. — Letter stating that the fencing at Terrace End would cost £47, also stating that Mr Smith, assistant, master, had notified his intention of resigning. The letter further contained a requisition for a number of school requisites. The Secretary stated , that ,the ,articles had been forwarded. It Was decided that the finances of the board did not warrant the expenditure desired for fencing, Carnarvon,— Request for increased ac- ■ comodati.on. To. be taken into, consideration when the board is m funds. Stanway.* — Letter from teacher, stating that he had been instructed to close the school on one day during the month m order that the, building might be used for a Methodist tea .mecting.-rMr Fry moved, That a letter.be forwarded to the committee, directing their attention to the matter. • Bimnythorpe. — Letter from com* mittceman regretting the removal of Mrs Boddy, and stating that if the results , are bad this year they were very good last year. j ,
