There may possibly bo no election contest for the Mayoral chair, and Mr Fer- j guson may be returned unopposed. Mr "West's nomination was not " received at the Town Clerk's oilice " by tlio lleturning OiHcer, according to notification to that effect appearing by advertisement m both the local papers for some time previously, and whenever the nomination was received it was not produced at the Town Clerk's ofiice by the Returning Officer until six minutes past the hour appointed. We hear that one ratepayer had been m attendance at the Municipal Chamber for a considerable time before and up to the hour for receiving nominations without being able, to see the Returning Officer with whom he wished to deposit a nomination paper. Those objections to the validity of the proceedings may be said to bo trivial and of no value or importance, but for all that m these critical times of rigid enforcement of Municipal Acts it is better to avoid risk of possible illegality m- the proceedings. We learn that Mr Ferguson's nomination paper was deposited witk the Returning Officer over a week ago. The Tongaxiro arrived at Rio Janeiro on Monday afternoon from Auckland. Her frozen mutton is reported to be m fair condition. Referring to Captain Russell's telecram bearing out. -Major Atkinson's denial of Sir Julias Vogel's statements, which we reported the other day, a Wairarapa paper says: — " It must strike the reader of the 'telegram how strange it is that such an important link m the controversy should have been suppressed by the Press Association and the journals supporting Vogelism." The telegraph boys m Wellington are now all 'provided with the new badges issued by the department. Instead ot being worn on the arm as hitherto, they are now fixed prominently on the strap of the satchel where it crosses thu I breast. The badge ib of scarlet leather, with the boy's number m large brass figures m the centre of it. Anyone who has a telegram to send can stop one of | these boys m the street, and give it to him with the money, whereupon tlit- boy i is bound to take the earliest opportunity j of lodging it at the office for transmission. The-Auckland Gity Council propose* to adopt ..the by-law of the Napier borough, prohibiting, with certain' 1 ex-, ceptions, processions at iiight with; music, without permission obtained from the Council. The Salvationists and Gospel Temperance Mission people; are vigorously. protesting against the measure. The former regard it as specially levelled at them. ~~" . Wnipawa jakes the cake for broken j legs* there having been tea there within ; a fortnight. ! The direct steamer Ao rand sai led , for. !
