Manawatu Standard (PUBLISHED DAILY.) The Oldest Daily Newspaper on the West Coast. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 14, 1885. THE GORGE BRIDGE.
Aptkb we'went to pressrlast cren^ .ing we received the following telegram frort our Wellington correspondent. •• Mi; M ac aut hur , has obtwined the balance of money required lor the Gorge Bridge. Tenders will be invited jjinmediatety ? " ; h wjll bg, remembered that; about two ' months «go a correspondent informed the public,, through the columns of the Standard, that the requisite ways and means for this important work had been arranged, and that it was trt be proceeded with at an early d&te.; CerWin J .^Jthejr^ inflation -was placed at bur 2 * which enabled us to, speak wjth confidence off the subject. * We now repeat-bur congratulations on the desirable consummation which is shortly, after years of weary waiting, to be attained. We have on many; many occasions advocated m these columns the numerous, claims to , consideration, as an importaut colonial >work. which the erection ..of the Gorge Bridge, m our opinion, unquestionably presented. -As ) the key to the junction of the East , and West Coasts, Us paramount- importance n. ■ ' ■
cannot b<» denied. It is a work which should have been constructed years ago. The expense, delays and inconvenience which the absence of a bridge has entailed upon traffic through the Gorge have been simply incalculable, and the result has been to retard settlement and progressing these districts to an extent that it is difficult to approximate or realize. We consider the intelligence we now .lay before our readers, to the effect that the work is actually rat last to be commenced, is the best news chat has reached us for many a ; day. We trust that nothing will interfere 'with the rapid construction of the bridgeFand -the speedy 1 opening~df uninterrupted communication.* *PJie result will bef equally Beneficial to Feilding as to Palmerston, as when the drawbacks inseparable from ferry traffic are removed, there w»lj pel a UafgeTand traffic tight through via Feilding to Kan4 gitikei, Wanganui, and, the; North.! It is a reflection on the Government that the delays have been so aggravating, as with the timber lying there for years past there was. no valid excuse why the work should not have' been, completed, long T>efore now, as its paramount importance entitled iti to precedence of consideration. To 1 our member, Mr M ACARTHtrn, all credit is due for the zeal and perseverance he has displayed m bringing matters to their present satisfactory stage of advancement. We very much fear that had the interests of Manawatu been entrusted to other hands, similar success would not have been achieved, and we heartily I congratulate him on the result attained, ancL the district on .haying such an indefatigable and vigilant representative. We sincerely trust no untoward hitch will occur to interfere with the arrangements now so happily inaugurated, and : which?we hope will realize an entirely satisfactory consummation, 1 m the early : completion of such an important 'colonial work m this pjart of > North Island,, and one so intimately I connected with the progress of set:dement, as. the Gorge Bridge.- ?
