In his telegram to the;Chairnian of the Chamber of Commerce respecting the proposed seizure of the loan for general i|ju|r|oses. Sir Julius Vogei, asserted that he knew that Major Atkinson was fully aware that passing Capt. Russell's motion meant taking the million Ibanj for general purposes. The faranaki Herald telegraphed to Major Atkinson to know if such was the fact, and received the following answer : — " New Elymouth, Saturday—Am living m the country, and only received your telegram yesterday. Have hot seen Sir:. J^bgel's | telegram to which you refer, so am at a disadvantage m giving the information you want. Did not know that refusing the loan would compel 'Government 1 to spend the North Island T.'runk loan, on general purposes. There was m round numbers 2;050,000 to the credit of the Public AVorks Fund on 31st March last, ancf the Minister of ' Public Works., stated m the.
