THE MELBOURNE CUP.
The results of the Melbourne Cup run yesterday, which were posted at the Standard office at 6.30 o'clock last nght, surprised a good many. The latu.st betting before the race was recorded as follows -.-—Sheet Anchor, 100 to 4 ; Grace Darling, 100 to 5 ; Trenton, 100 to 16 ; Nordenfelt, 100 to 18. Very! likely the winner, not being a favourite,: cou'id have been purchased by the holder m Robin Hood's Consultation for a very small, amount, and the lucky individuil will now draw £3,273 net, possibly for the investment of a solitarj halfsovereign, or it may havo been less, as, a number of tickets were won m half-crown sweeps. Sheet Anchor's number m Robin Hood's result slip appears as 12,871 ; Grace Darling, 18,406 ; Trenton, .13,835 ; Nordenfelt, 31,094. In examining the printed list last evening wo discovered that one of the tickets m the book sent to the Standard drew a horse v.z., 10,524, which drew Warwick. It is held by a resident of Ashurst. Warwick was quoted at 100 to 2, and was one of* the acceptors. It is more than probable that he was a Btarter, m which case he would be entitled to over £20 net. We congratulate the lucky holder.
