A Gisborne telegram states that from a passenger's narrative, the fire on board; the steamer Wairarapa appeared to have! gained great strength before any alarinj was given. Some of the passengers were! with difficulty aroused from the stupori caused by the smoke. Some of the, ladies escaped m a single garment only. : He thinks the fire could have been discovered sooner had a more vigilant watch been kept. He says the boats were; quite inadequate. Some of the passengers have lost everything. The steamer; on returning from Auckland will refit at j Port Chalmers. The chief steward was j nearly suffocated m saving the plate, i The steering and electric light gear have | been destroyed. It is now believed the i fire was caused by one of the steam pipes i becoming overheated. The- cargo is but : little damaged. '
