THE PRESENT DEPRESSION.
At the last half-yearly meeting 1 of the Bank of New Zealand, the Chairman, referring to the present degression m the colojiy, said he ' felt no uneasiness on thatj account. It had been a matter '■ of wonder to him . how quickly the colony recovered from periods of depression, and notably from the very severe one of 1876-77. He had every ' faith m the colony overtaking the present depression ; und getting once more Into the tide of prosperity. The population m the old country was now getting so dense that people must have .an outlet, and with! the great improvements now effected m the movements of population, there was no doubt that m a very little timeiwe would see m these colonies a •eohtihwal influx of good immigrants from the old country seeking to establish new homes. He looked upon that as one of the surest guarantees for the return of prosnerity to the colony.
