Wellington College Reserves

I At the last meeting of the Board of the . Wellington College Governors, Mr Bunny ! and Dr Newman submitted their report on the College Beaerves they had lately '• visited. The following extract will be of ! local interest : — We next inspected the ' reserves m Palraerston North which con- ; Bist of 3 acres m the heart of the town--1 ship, and alco 82£ acres lying midway between Market-square and the Race- : course. The 32£ acres are covered with bush. All the land near it is being cleared, and private residences have been built on several of the adjoining sections. It is bounded on three sides by roads, and at the back lies some land set apart for primary education. The land is flat and fit for building sites or liiarket.gardens. At Fitzherbeft are two bush" re-" serves — One of 757 acres divided into six sections, and another pt ,92 acres. The larger lies at tf)e foot, of ' v th'e hills. They are within easy Teach Jof the township and railway station of Linton. The owners of land adjoining the larger reserve have cleared the bush alone: its boundary. The land- is very goods Dr Newman, speaking- to tie report, said that on the question of the disposal of the lands Mr Bunny and v himself disagreed. The speaker was m iavor of the lands being leased, and they would then revert again to the Board at a • highly increased value. The Governor m Council had the power to give the Board authority to sell the lands, but he had Mr Stout's assurance that he would not give the power. Mr Bunny recommended that the lands be. sold. j)r Newman had Mr Stout's word that the: Board would riot receive the atarfiority.to sell the. Jands, but tSe present Government would not always be m office. The Board had a valuable site for a Girl's High School, but had no funds for the building. By selling some of the lands, which were a clop; and encumbrance, they could easily realise the money necessary lor such a work. Some further discussion took place on the subject, the report being eventually adopted, Mr Bunny giving notice of a motion for the next meeting. The sum of £9 9s was voted to Mr Bunny for compensation for loss of tim« whilst engaged m the report on the reserve. The Chairman stated that ho had mado , a proposal to Mr Luckie for a lean of j;3000 with advances, bringing the amount up to £5000, for 10 years,\rith a right to pay off m six month?. Mr Bunny said that he would move the i following motion at' the next meeting of

the Board — " Tnat the College Governors apply tor authority, under the Land Act 1885, to sell the Paraekaretn Block anil lands m Paimerston, and to lease lands m the Mangaone Block, belonging to the Giris' High School, oh the perpetual leasing systoin."
