For permitting Sunday trading a publican was yesterday fined £5 and costs, and 50s and costs for permitting drunkenness m his licensed house. * Gisborhe, Friday. It has been decided to incorporate the local Hospital as a separate institution. New Plymouth^ Friday. - The Supreme Court was opened this morning by Judge Gillies: Theie are four cases for trial, but none are of a very serious nature. The first case heard waß that of George Faville, charged with attempting to burn down the.Oeo Hotel, fie was found guilty, and sentenced to ten years' penal servitude. , Kumara, Friday. A public meeting of subscribers of the local hospital was held on Wednesday night, at which two resolutions were passed, the first condemning the action of Government m withholding two quarters' subsidies due to the institution, and the second affirming the desirableness of 'notifying for a separate institution for Kuniara under the new Act. • Blenheim, Friday. , The carbine with which a boy accidentally shot his brother was examined yesterday by Captain Baillie, the officer commanding the district) and found perfectly sound m every respect. The statement made by the boy at the inqueit, that the carbine went off at half cock because of a defective lock must be incorrect. All rifles and carbines m the district were inspected and found m good order by Captain Baillie just before last session. • Christchdrch, Friday. Mr. Richardson, Minister /or Public "Worts, arrived from Wellington m the Hawea yesterday morning. On Wednesday night the Salvation Army Hall, Madras-street, was broken into,; an entrance having been effected through the front window. Plunder was evidently the object of the perpetrator, who, however, only succeeded m obtaining the sum of 3s lOd, for which he had to break open two or three locks, and take considerably more trouble than the money was worth. It is supposed the burglar thought he would secure the'results of a collection which had been made at the previous service m aid of the building fund, and which, it is Stated, had realised £30. Fortunately, however, the money had been removed. The charge of assault against Osoar Johnston, a pupil teacher at the Heathcote School, came before the Resident Magistrate's Court again yesterday, when the evidence of two girls who were present at the time was taken, and did not at all bear out tha statements made by the police at the previous hearing. They said that the girl was naturally sickly, and had complained ot being unwell on the particular morning, and the teacher only touched her slightly with the pointer to attract her attention. She did not faint, and, though she complained of being unwell shortly afterward, she ■remained m school till it was dismissed for the afternoon. As the girl is still ill, the case was further adjourned till November 19th. Auckland, Friday. things a reaction must set m before long. Wellington, Thursday. The Marine Department has received the following telegram from the Haroour Master at Greymouth. The master of the steamer Oreti reports that while coasting close into shore he observed the hull of a vessel about 60 tons close to the beach between Rocks Point and a remarkable slip. Nobody seen. The vessel looks beached.
