Tho London correspondent of the Dunedin Evening" Star writ oh: — Some sensation was caused m A nglocolonial city circles the other morning by a rumor to the effect that Captain Crutchley, of the R.M.S.S Koikoura, had beeu arrested on a charge of bigamy. This pietty tale had h;udly time to get about before some person, saner than his fellows, suddenly re membered that Captain Crutchley was on hoard his ves>el half-way out to New Zealand, and pons<'quenj;ly oouhl scarcely be m J^ondou undergoing a trial for bigaiuy. '['he story was then investigated, and found to l>e us follows :— On Thursday last John Malcolm, a sal«inan'« cashier at the Central Meat Market, was charged on remand with hiving married Emma Dash at Brighton, his Cornier wife being now alive. Miss Dash deposed to meeting the prisoner at Brigh ton . H e said he was th a captain of the New Zealand liver Kaikoura, and as hor friend.s found there was such a vessel, they believed him After a five days' acquaintance, Miss Dash and the gallant captaiu were married at Brighton, and went to Chichester for a few days' honeymoon. The bridegroom then rejoined hisshi|», which was on the point of sailing to New Zealand. One day at the beginning of the present month an intimate friend or Miss Dash, who had assisted at her wedding, went to an annual fete known as the ♦' Butcher's Garden Party." There, lo and liehoM !he spotted the recceatit bridegroom, fondly supposed by his doting spou.se to be speeding* towards the Antipodes. Tho wretch was recognised, but protested there was some mistake, as lie could prove he waa selling fiozen mutton at the Central Meat market at the very hour Mix* D., was bein^ married at Brighton. Miss D., however, when confronted with Malcolm ci ied " Thou art the man," and swooned away. Subsequently Me.sdamey Malcolm one and two met m the corridor of the court and indulged m a feminine fight hair, pearl powder, eyt'-biMws, and fingernails, flying about m all directions. Malcolm will m all probability be committed for trial.
