The Sale of Westoe.
Concprning the- comments maue some months since on the sale of Weatoe, Sir William Fox has written 10 the editor of the Wellington Evening Press as follows:— "I have to t'>unk you very sinoen-ly for the gonorouH manner m which yon have defended me against the ' Sneaks' and tUeir iuiseral»le at tempt to hold mo up to pnblio contempt on account of my Uangitifcpi propnily having been sold to a piiMjeau— or rather, to a publican and two oilier p»-r---dons. I need not give any explanation to you, as j'ou have evidently had the correct state of the facts given you" by someone who knew. Till I «ot my agent's letter a week ago (that i» six -weeks after the sale had been efaect«>d) I'll fcd not the remotest idea of who the purchasers. were. As it. is, whether. I like it or not, I have no choice. My agent exercised his discretion within the limits which I have imposed as to amount, and that was all I knew about it. Suppose he had sold it by auction, and a pnhjiean had beeu the highest bidder — I suppose even m. that case 1 the drnnkards would have made songs upon me. m the gates.' One thing I can ' assure them of, namely, tint the purchase money will be us*d by me m on the war against the liquor and 1 hope put to a better use than it was likely to be if kept m the hands' of the publican."
