To our Readers and Advertisers.
We must ask the indulgence of our readers for the limited quantity of reading matter m to-day's issue. The fact , is we have been giving eight, nine, and sometimes ten columns of reading matter day after day, when the room available was really not more than half that space. This meant that advertisements were crowded out issue after issue, though by substituting some columns for others we have managed to give most of them a show now and again. Some kind anonymous friend has taken the trouble to note this fact and point out to sundry advertisers that theii ad ertisements have not. been appearing m the Standard regularly, &c, &c. This is only one of the ways m which-.envy and jealousy at our success prompts some people to seek to injure us. Wo had intended to have enlarged before now, so as to allow more room, and had made all preparations for so doing. But un fortunately our paper-makers at Home did not receive instructions m time, and we have to use up a pretty large supply of paper before we can carry out ourwishes. In our effort to give as good a reading paper, night after night as possible, we have rather neglected advertisers' interests, and that has . been pointed out to them. With all the space devoted m this issue to advertisements, there are still four columns for which space 'cannot -be found. A number of thosjß advertisements now appearing are set •m the smallest typo nie.l itr newspapers, viz., nonpareil, by which the- space occupied is reduced to one-half. By effecting an intermediate enlargement shortly, and by setting the advertisements m smaller type, a large supply of which is now on the road from London, we hope soon to be able to give more space to advertisements than heretofore. The secret of the success of our large circulation has been the excellent reading paper we give, and even at the risk of losing some advertisements we intend to continue to do so. We have to thank those who so hare so liberally supported us, and also those who go out of their way to cause us annoyance. To both we are indebted for many favours. On this occasion we apologise to those advertisers whose an nouncements have not appeared as regularly as they should, and to our reader* m this issue, for so encroaching on the space which we usually devote to reading matter. Under the circumstances we feel sure special consideration will not be denied us. ■ ■
