(UNITED PRESS ASgSOOiATXON.) Sydney, Tuesday. The debate m the Assembly has been characterised by much personality. The Government has been attacked on fa variety of grounds, but most of the Opposition has been levelled attfie Minister of Lands for his administration of the Land Act. He is accused of being unduly influenced by his sons-in-law, who are land agents, but the result of the debate is regarded as a foregone conclusion. Mr McElhone has stated that he does not again intend entering Parliament^ • • The Premier has been unwell, but has now recovered. : - ' . ■'*, ;, v A Board r is being held to inquire into the charge of cowardice against Captain Mulholland m the Soundan, as preferred by.. Mr Suttor m the Assembly. . .-., _ A Select Committee of the AlssemblV has been appointed to inquire into certain .charges against Mr Melville, . one of the members, to the effect that he received £25 to use his influence as a member of Parliament. Melville was committed for receiving the money, but only as an ordinary object. Tfitfersall's Club intend to hold a twq days' meeting at the New : Year. Between three and four thousand pounds will be given away m prizes. Melbourne. The Premier, m answering au overture m reference to a -resolution .proposed, jn the New Zealand Parliament referring to the desirability of New Guinea being made a Crown colon}', said he had only seen it reported m the papers,, and had received no other communication. He thought the" motion altogether unnecessary. They teel the necessity of opening up New Guinea to traders, and had 'communicated with Sir Peter Scratchier m that respect. With regard to their contribution, they were bound to pay; this £15,000 as a matter of honor, and they proposed to continue the payment •for five yearn, but at the same time, let it be distinctly understood, the Colonies must have some control, over the revenue.
