In Explanation.

A local print m Monday's issue accused tho Standard of castiug a " discreditable reflection " on Mr J. P. Leary m reference to charging for printing of programmes for the entertainment m aid of the Public Library. We said, and still say, that: while both local newspapers advertised the programme and preliminary notice gratis, the printing and rent of the hall might have been given free under the circumstances "We did not li extol our own . literality," as the local print m question states, but plainly said M both the local newspapers." This is hot the first, second, or third time that the same local print has tried to embroil us m a personal quarrel with Mr Leary. On two occasions when the printing of the electoral roll was tendered for, it sought to make out that we had first ascertained, .Mr Leary's price, arid then tried to cut under him ; when, as a matter; of fact, Mr Leary and ourselves were working together m the matter. This was pointed out- to the editor of the said local print, but asjisual he refused ;to t make any explanation. We remember, that we" then 'told him viva voce how " contemptible" we considered his action.; But we fancy a good-many. others. arjs. now beginning to think' that h^.oanhot. exactly help himself. It is a case of second nature,— the Ethiopian and his colour, the leopard .and his ;sp.ots.We do think, however-! it is a yery despicable trait m any journalist, ibis picking out and enlarging npbn statements m another newspaper that can by \ an^y possible means be twisted into a " .per-, sonal reflection '• of some kind. We-do not envy the mind of the; journalist' who ; goes about m this way, trying to. foment quarrels. The amusing part o£ the paragraph is %yherein it points out that Mi" Leary's. contribution represents "Gashout of pocket." Well, if the local print can get its work done without "cash' out of pocket " it is more fortunate th'iiti we are. The "inconsistency comos m where the said local print " went- for " the secretary when bringing m the copy of the programme, because of its length ! But can't a ijolitary word of excuse be ioiind for thi liberal action of the Hall people, m charging for its occupation on the occasion m question? . :
