Lady Reidhaven recently invited a large number of Oauiaru boys to on entertainment which was provided for their delectation, aud the Oamaru fMazl commented rather unfavourably on thq unruliness of the children, aud expressed the opinion that most of them would have been better m their- beds This has drawn a somewhat spirited reply from Lady Reidhaveu,who sajs that from all sides she " heard a great deal regarding the larrikin classes of I Oamaru t " and she wished to teat for hcisclf if the "young vagadonds" were as bad as they were painted. 1 Her ladyship declares that though tho lads were noisy and unruly, still' during the eveniug she never heard one bad or disrespectful word. • -. ■ A few days ago a trial too'c place of Mr D'Anvera' patent shoep-shears, at jMr A. Amon's, Lower Rangitikoi. I Messrs Scott, Doughty, W. Amon, A. Ainon, Findlay. and J. Higgle tried them, and all spoke m terms of the highest praise of the new shears. One of the chief points m the patent is that j it is impossible to cut the sheep with ! them. This point was thoroughly tested, and the advantage of the shears over the ordinary ones m this respect was clearly demonstrated. ■ . *-"
The Lyttleton Times reports that on Saturday night, as the Hawera was moving away from the, wharf at Port L ttleton, Mr J. W. Dodge, manager of the Silver King Company who was standing o-i the edge of the wharf t»ayinggood-byo to friends, reached out his walking- stich to a gentleman on board. The' latter playfully gave it a jerk, and Mr Dodge, losing his balance fell forward. The vessel was then some 6ft from the wharf, and Mr Dodge seeing his impending danger, with much presence of mind jumped at the lower rail of the bulwarks, which he fortunately caught. Captain HansUy very promptly and kindly reversed the engines and backed the steamer along--Bde a/jam. Excepting a few slight' bruises, Mr Dodge escaped without hurt.
