The Waipawa Mail says ; — A gentleman of this town, who has recently visited Dunedin informs nsthat h« has seen nothing m that part of the world to tempt him to leave Hawke's Bay. He describes the trip by train along the Waimea Valley as disheartening m the extreme. The hills oil either side arc covered with snow, and the valley itself is poor and stoney. It is mostly arable land, and our quite misses, he says, th>grecu pastures of Hawke's Bay. In one paddock ho came across a pig and a sheep. Tho pig was rooting furiously, and the sheep was looking: on to sec what might come up from below, for there was nothing on the surf act 1 . . The Inspector of Schools remarked to the Board of E l ucation yesterday (says Wednesday's Evening News), that something ought to be done to check the drinking propensities of some 7 of the teichers m the Hawko's Bay. He had had to go 200 miles after one man, whose conduct had been 'most disgraceful. His committee, however, took the teacher's part, said he was a very good man, and hushed the matter up. Such conduct m a teacher, he considered, .must have a bad effect on the moral tone of the school. Says Wednesday's Post : — Threo subpoena* were signed this morning for the attendance of witnesses who will be required to give their att«ndauce at the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday next m thoHutt tarring caso.' ' Information of a certain character m connection with* the case was given to Constable Milton this.morrung which, it is said, may elucidate the mysterj' as to who 'were*' the real aggressors m the outrage. ■ Blenheim papers record an oystereating fratch for a wnger. One roan ate 15 dozen right off, but had no chance against his opponent, who apparently without inconvenience ate no leBS than 27 dozeu at the silting. In the charge against Maurice Jflynn, at the -Wang nin in' Supreme Couit, the jury were unable to agree, and the prisoner was jlißuharged.' r The evidence was very sinaliar to that given m the case against Bradley for stealing money from O'Brien. No evidence for the dcv fence was called. This was the last of the criminal caees.
