The Borough Council election passed off very quietly. The results are :— Hvron, 1*53 ; Perry, 174; Cullon, 147. The first three aro elected. Auckland, Friday. The Arawata has arrived from Fiji. Shu brings files to eptember 3. Fever at Leyuka and Suva is. particularly active. Typhoid fever lias shown itself m Lomaloina, caused by the filthy state of the Native towns. The Rev. W. Rosewarn**, Wesleyan missionay, formerly of New Zealan I, fell a victim to it. Many Native deaths are laid to its charge. Tho Native mortality is apparently on the increase. The death rate from several places is reported as doubling the birth rate over the period noted. ' Thomas Pollock, of VVaikato,.has been arrested for larceny as a bailee of 225 sheep and 18 head of cattle, the i>roperty of Mr. William Foley of Aucklmid. The stock was all disposed of by auction. Hokitika, Friday. Considerable interest was taken m tho election of three Borough- Councillors yesterday, owing to a lady being amongst the candidates. On the poll liuiug declared, it was found the lady Mrs Hall, stool iir'th, getting 86 votes out of 841. There were eight candidates. * Timabu- Friday. At the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Killo Club, a motion was carried,, challenging any Glub m the Colony to match ten nieii aside— ranges and other conditions to be .arranged on acceptance of the challenge. This Club is the only one on New Zealand, armed with the latest improved pattern of breech- loaders. "■■ ; -'-" J ' '■'' On Tuesday night a house at 'Temple-; . ton, belonging to J. Saint, journalist, was : burnt down. The house and furniturewere insured tor £300 m the Equitable Cffice. The fire was caused by acandle being accidentally upset. It has been reported that two sirls, who escaped from Burnhani a few days_ back, are wandering about the fort Hills, and that when seen they appeared' to be m a very poor condition. Several policemen have been out all day to try and find the runaways, or any trace of them, but have returned after a fruitless search. Later. The two girls who escaped from Burnhaui were recaptured by the Lyttelton police on the; Port Hills.
