The Brigantine Gleaner in a Gale.

The brigantinc Gleaner, Captain Urguliart, from Oamam for Napier, was sighted between Bare Island and Kidnappers at eleven o'ctock yesterday ni«ht iby A,,, 8 " 8 ' Kiwi ' which was on her way to Wellington. The Gleaner was burning distress lights, and when the Kiwi bore down on her she found that she had nothing standing but her mainmast the foremast having been gone by the board, and her main topmast, bowsprit, and and- part of cutwater were carried away The Kiwi at once took her in tow, and had just got fairly started for Napier, when tne present southerly gale struck them, which allowed the Kiwi to come on under easy steam, arriving off the Bluff at 3 a.m., an got alongside the breastwork between six and seven o'clock. The Gleaner reports having left Oamarn on August 28th with a fresh southerly wind which carried her as far as Banks Peninsula. Breasted Akaroa at noon on 29th, thence li<?ht northwest wind until midnight on 30th, when it gradually freshened to a eate, and at noon following: day was blowing almost a hurricane with very high lumpy sea running the vessel was making heavy weather of it, and during a heavy lurch carried, her foremast, main topmast, jibboom, and bowsprit away, as well as tcarinf out her chain plates. At 6 p.m while hove-to, she shipped a heavy sea, winch smashed the boat and galley, besides doing other damages about the decks. During the remainder of the gale she had drifted about 100 miles Northeast, after which a Southerly breeze carried her in shore again, sighting land again on the 7th instant off Cape Turnagam, and was picked up the following night off Bare Island by the s.s. Kiwi. No accident occurred, however, to either life or limb. He cargo consists of 800 bass of flour, 30 bags of bran, 11 bags af pollard, 58 bags of potatoes, ana 10 bags of wheat for various consignees. Captain Urquhart has, however, entered a protest for his vessel's owners before her hatches are lifted. The Gleaner is at present alongside the lower end of the breastwork, and presents a very delapidated appearance, having suffered a most severe knocking about.
