The carriers held a meeting yesterdayand appointed a deputation to wait on the Minister of Public Works re railway charges, and resolved if no reduction were made, to form a company to compete with the line, the charges to be six shillings per bale for wool, and 35s per ton for goods. Auckland, Thursday. An immense and distinguished audience assembled to hear George Augusta Sala last night, although only 24 hours' notice of the lecture was given. For more than two hours, without reference to book or note, the great journalist gave a most graphic description of the Russian Empire, concluding with his opinion as to the probability of war between England and Russia. He held his audience from first to last. Great regret is expressed that Mr Sala cannot prolong his stay. He leaves for Wellington to-day, and on his way back to Melbourne will lecture in Tasmania. Mr Sala was entertained at the Northern Club with a select party by Mr C. C. Macmillan. He made a speech referring to his colonial impressions. George Shepherd, one of the assistant, stewards of tho Manaponri, was charged with smuggling tobacco ashore, and fined double the value of the goods, or fourteen days' imprisonment. Master bakers have resolved for an association for Auckland. The police are carrying on a raid against keepers of brothels and disorderly houses. Despite tho ;!llc<;ed dull times, many extensive business p.omises are in course of construction, or have tenders called. Arrived — Arawata, from Fiji. Passengers for Dunedin — Spinks and Ladder. Dunkdin, Thursday. The five children who were drowned on Sunday were buried yesterday, a half-holiday having been declared by the Mayor of Port Chalmers. Tho funeral was a very large one. A youth named E. Hughes, alias G. Wilson, has been committed for trial for breaking into 'a house and stealing money. Admiral Scott read a paper on the defences of the Colony before a meeting last evening. Hesolntions were passed condemning the proposed expenditure on defences and the scheme of employing the Armed Constabulary on external defence."
