Among the late obituary notices (says the Lyttelton Times) appears that of Mr Mark Pringle Stoddart. This gentleman; was one ot the first settlers who came to the Colony from Australia. He arrived from Sydney m March, 1851, and almost immediately formed a sheep station on the llakaia, now the property of bir John Hall. He afterwards purchased the estate called by h m Diamond Harbor, where he resided for many years. To the storm-stayed traveller to Pigeon Bay and Akaroa, his frank and warm hos pitality, and that of Mrs Stoddart, was always heartily extended m those days, when roads and steamers were unknown. Mr Stoddart lieM a se it m the old Provincial Council for Victor'. t!, and was consistent and hone&t m his views. ■ Al though not so distinguished an angler as hi 3 late brother, Mr Tone T. Stoddart, he was equally enthusiastic m the sport, and took great interest m the labours of the Acclimatisation Society. Some years since he paid a long visit to Scotland, and since his return has resided at Fendalton with his family. He. died on Friday after a short illness, m his G7th year. His stalwart form and genial ' humor will be greatly misled m his wide circle of friends for many a duy. The Major, or Captain brought the cheque m coppers, which he carried m one side pocket, and which gave him the appearance, of being 1 lopsided considerably, After the nsual salutations, the General ventured to remark ho had brought the rest, and forthwith produced the coppers with a request that they should be counted. His Worship shook. his. head at this,however, and gave a receipt rematkinghe believed the man was honest, and would take his word m any case, as ho was too busy to tackle a job of that kind.
