On the motion of supply, Mr Lance moved — That efficient steps should ' be taken to stamp out the scab m sheep, wherever it exists. Sir Julius Yogel said that the Government would place a sura on the Estimates for the purpose, and the amendment was witdrawn. Mr Moss moved thut retrenchment is: desirable, and to the effect that a num. her of members of both Houses should be reduced with corresponding reduction m Ministers and Departmental expenditure, also that a simple, economical, and self-dependent system of local government should be devised. The Premier agreed with the request for a reduction, but pointed out the difficulty of carrying the motion into effect. The amendment was negatived on the voices. The House then went into Committee on the Estimates, class 1, Legislative Vote, Clerk of Council, £600, was reduced by .£IOO ; Clerk assistant, £400, reduced by £50. Mr Fultun moved the omisison of Chairman of Public Petitions Committee. £100. ' The amendment was negatived on the voices. Mr Fulton moved the omission of Chairman of Native Committee, £100. The amendment was lost on a division, by 24 to 22. Mr Hursthouse moved the omission of Chairman of Gold Fields Committee. On a division, the item was struck off by 34 to 28. Mr Fulton moved to omit the item, Chairman of Waste Lands Committee. £100. After some discussion the item was put :— Ayes, 26 ; Noes, 26. The Chairman gave his casting vote [ with the Noes. Mr W. Buckland moved to reduce the amount by £99. On a division, the amendment was lost by 25 to 22. Mr Duncan moved that the item be reduced by £50. Tin's was carried by 25 to 21. ' The vote as* amended passed. Class 2, Colonial Secretary's Department, £221,568, passed without alteration. Clause 14, Colonial Treasurer's Department, £62,258, passed without alteration. • The Public Trust Account, £4,275. Mr Holmes moved to reduce the amount by £150 so as to have the vote same as last year. The amondmsnt was negatived, aDd the item passed. Progress was then reported and the House rose at 3.40 a.m.
