A great demonstration took place m welcoming King George en his return from his four years' seclusion at Vavau to Tongatahu. The Sanitary Inspector reports to the Council that he traced the disease to the use of impure water from wells, and recommends all wells to be closed and the peoplo compelled to use the City supply. J. Driscoll, a lad now undergoing sentence m prison, was convicted this morning of indecent assault on Emma Stevens, nine years of age, and sentenced to six months' hard labor. Masterton, Friday. Messrs Barker and Buckridge, of the Survey Department, have pitched a camp at the foot of Otahuao. Hill, and I commenced the erection of a station on the top of the hill for observing the eclipse of the sun. Mr McKerrow and five others are expected to come up. New Plymouth, Friday. Over forty applications were received by the Education Board for the appointinent of head mastership at the Central School, New Plymouth.
