The steamer Port Darwin sailed on the 15th instant for Sydnny, taking 300 men as reliefs for tho vessel belonging to the Australian squadron. Sir Robert Hart, who was recently appointed to the position of British Minister at Pokin, has resigned that appointment, aud will resume his former office of Chinese Commissioner o£ Customs. Mr W. G. George, of Birmingham, tho champion amateur long-distance runner, has defeated Mr W Cumings, of Paisley, tho celebrated long-distance man, iv a mile race. Sir M. W. Ridley, M.P. for Northumberland North, has been appointed Financial Secretary to the Treasury. The telegraph companies interested aro hesitating about agreeing to the proposed reductions if the Gorman j scheme of charges, now before the Conference, should be finally approved of.
