BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The .usual \nvuithly meeting of the -ibove was. held {last evening. .Presentf^fEs Wowhip the Mayor, and Crs'Ha^kifis, West, Larcomb, T. King, Abrahams, and Grace. The minutes of last ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. ' .'•■■'■: The, Mayor said it would appear that the Act- under which association worked, says that any advances made to public! or /other bodies tnustrbebarfiiM by a special rate, and .'he; believed-*" that Sir Julius Yogel understood that such rate was prepared to be struck by the Council when he made the original offer ; however, when he. founi this was not the case, he of course acquainted the Council of the fact and so far as he was concerned there was an end of it. Proposed by Cr King, seconded by Cr Grace — TKat the metalling referred to m Mr Milyerton's letter .'be carried out as early as possible.. ,',. ;'i :^'" Cr Larcomb read a requisition from Messrs Gatton; Chapman, Cams, Newport, Silvat, and Just, requesting that College-street West from the Botanical Koad to the Town Boundary should be made. The letter also stated that the work had been authorised some 18 months ago but had not been done since. Cr Larcomb testified to the state of the road and supported tjie application that it should be repaired at an early date. INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES^ During past month had no lime to visit any of the premises to see whether any nuisances existed, but should take a day next month to. go round and report at the next meeting. Served • notices to Mr James, Wanganui, re dangerous treeg on- section m College-street, also to Mr Powles, of Wellington, dangerous trees on College Reserve. Both replied that same would be done. Mr James is having the whole of his down. On College Reserve it is intended to fall a chain back from road line right- through. -- INSPECTOR OF WORKS. Report stated that repairs on different streets had been effected where most required. Fitzroy-street from Main T street to tannery. 20 chains repaired m North-street, Fitzherbert road, and Fer-guson-street East. Holes filled up m Botanical Road, but more of the latter to be done. Metalling done m Mam-street near Mr Ferguson's leaving -30 chains more to be done. Pitt-street done so far as Ferguson-street leaving 5 chains to be done to Powell's gate' making 13 chains altogether.: A good deal of filling to be done of the new roads before the metal goes on as it would not pay to put metal on as they are; Had used dray for filling m low place m College-street West m order to allow a resident to convey timber to his property. Had filled m hole m front of Mr Wiltshire's' house m Main-street. Had raked. in about 60 chains of road which had been metalled some time back and stones broken up. North-street is next to receive attention; Grey-street must' be repaired as all the carting done there. 20 chains to be done m North street. Col-lege-street We3t, is next and it is not formed right through, 16 to 18 chains of metalling to be done. Ail the men doing their work well and with satisfaction. A culvert opposite Mr Abrahams, m Mainstreet, over a chain long, is always breaking through, being rotten; think that . best thing would be to take it but and place curbing or put a new top on the culvert, all these works to be carried out m rotation. Any repairs required to be done at once to prevent accident had been attended to. : . Finance Committee. Meeting held on September 1. Present— The Mayor, Cr. S. Abrahams, and W. Park. An application was received from the Chairman of. the Public Library Comnrttee for amount of insurance on contents ' of library. -..'■..■■*- Resolved that amount be paid. Application from Liquidators of the Town Hall for the balance due on the property. " • Resolved that the Council be recommended to nay the amounts due as soon as the deeds are completed. Application received from J. O. W. Koelher asking to be reobuped the loss of 5 cases kerosene destroyed m the fire which occurred m the Town Hall. Resolved that the Council be recommended to pay the cost ot thekerosine lost and cancel agreement with custodian of Hall for the half of the current quarter, paying the sum of 30s m full of claim m accordance with the said agreement. ... The following accounts were considered and recommended for payment.: — Road wages, £48 2s ; Town Clerk, £16 13s 4d ; R. N. KeeKng, stamp's and stationery, £l 14s 5d ; W. : H.'Haines poundkeeper, £4 3s 4d ; Khpeler, custodian of Hali, £3 ; advertising, £7 10s 9d ; Jordan, destroying dogs, £1 18s ; Wanganui Hospital, £2 12s; Charitable AW Comnrttee, 4 weeks to Johnson, £4; H. Moffatt, (lighting), M 16 ; A. Ferguson, material, i' 2 6sod. POUNDKEEPER'S REPORT.
